Here's a little challenge. Have your students start typing in the URL, letter by letter, slash by tedious slash, to this website:
Now sit back and gaze at their bewildered faces while you giggle wickedly.
You would NEVER do that, would you?? (I hope the answer is no...) Instead, why not use a URL shortener? This tool takes that long string of gunk and shortens it up. Some of these sites will generate a short but random string of letters and numbers, but with others allow you to customize your new URL. Here are a few I have shortened for you; these links all go to the same place - test them out!
For younger students, I prefer to use one of the customizable ones, like Tiny URL or bit.ly. But for Twitter (where you have to limit the number of characters and therefore want the shortest URL possible), colleagues, friends, or even older kids, just pick your favorite!
